Haphazardly moving applications into the cloud may give you a short term ego boost, but it is hardly a long term strategy to improve your company operations. The goals for the CITO position are also slightly changed: 1. Tech execs are now responsible for company culture; 2. IT becomes a primary arbiter of policies that advance the needs of the entire company; and 3. adaptive technology is addressed in a timely fashion, integrated into a holistic, interdepartmental infrastructure.

It may be advantageous to merge the IT department into Line of Business units with a goal of developing Business Integrated DevOps teams, teams that will be able to integrate and collaborate more efficiently within the DevOps framework. Imagine being able to move forward holistically without friction from any department specialist holding to ideological blinders. This structure is actually par for the course, and no longer a luxury.

Role Changes

If your organizational structure includes a Chief Information Security Officer or a Chief Privacy Officer, the role may be better structured if rolled into Quality Assurance and a more synergetic partnership with other aspects of product and process optimization. The CISO/CPO role is quite important because of the technical proficiency assumed within it, and even the more holistic new role should be given a relatively high positioning in your new infrastructure.

In general, your business must take steps to integrate process with innovation. Continuous improvement principles that involve fully embracing innovation and accelerated execution will naturally lead to a team more focused around results. The governance model of each company will look slightly different depending on industry standard and personality types; however, the overarching theme should be that this layer of governance organize the improved, flexibly distributed model to a higher efficiency, giving consistent and relevant feedback to it without fail.
